About the Shopdrifter
The University of Dayton Makerspace
Talk about your brand
The original Shopdrifter has been a dream for as long as I can remember. Once enrolled at the University of Dayton for Mechanical Engineering, I started working in the wood/metal shop at my university called the Makerspace. Within this space, you have access to multiple levels of woodworking and metalworking equipment to help you create whatever projects you can imagine, whether they be for school or personal. After discussing possible projects with a fellow facilitator, I drafted the idea of a shopping cart go-kart; something I had dreamed of since I worked at a grocery store. When he told me that I could not do it, I took it as a challenge to make my dreams a reality
The Design
The original design was enough to work temporarily, but over time, things break and change for the better. Since this initial design, I have widened the axle, replaced the brake pedal with a handbrake, replaced the entire steering assembly, replaced the gas tank, redone the exhaust, and more. The main design cannot change without the support from its fans.
Car Meets
The kart makes frequent appearances throughout Southwest, Ohio in numerous car meets. From the Ohio River to the fields of Jeffersonville, the kart continues to make appearances at car meets and events alike!
The Future...
Every adrenaline junkie can agree that even the most fun death traps can become boring after a while. That is why I continue to improve the kart so that every corner is faster, every handbrake pull feels crisp, and after every ride, myself and my fans are left satisfied.
